Has there ever been a good movie musical that did not become a hit? Musicals are perhaps the most difficult kind of movie to make and most filmmakers can't pull them off. So, we often end up with bad movie musicals, which then cause critics to announce the death of the movie musical. Every year, of course, there are dozens of terrible action and horror films, but no one reacts to them by declaring the death of those genres.

Time for Cop Rock: The Movie.

I didn’t see a bubble chart for the 1980s. Was there a reason for its absence?

Musicals are a favorite of mine. It seems that part of the decline of interest from general audiences is b/c they are now so heavily associated with children’s movies-- thank you Disney. The more that studios take a chance on flicks like LaLa Land, the more we can associate them with more diverse age brackets and themes.

There were no movies from the 1980s that made the cut of highest grossing films 😞

Do you have a particular favorite?

Grease, Wizard of Oz, Purple Rain, A Star Is Born (newest), Willy Wonka (original), and Sweeney Todd. Can’t choose just one 😂

Ooh Purple Rain! There is a meme going around that gen x is so diverse in taste and culture and politics that no one word or phrase can unite and excite them. Except, of course “Dearly beloved. . . “
