I loved reading this post--just like your other ones!

What about short excerpts of classical music pieces? I think I've heard bits of Vivaldi's Four Seasons, Beethoven's 5th and 9th symphonies, Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture and his Swan Lake, Pachelbel's Canon, Schubert's Ava Maria, Puccini's Nessun Dorma, and so on a zillion times in movies, TV shows, and commercials. Is it just my imagination?

Enjoyed reading, but I do quibble with the section on discovering new music ( I have also read the older post you did about it). Maybe it's just me but I do go seek out new music on a regular basis. But perhaps that's because of what I'm listening to, in the KPOP world it's so easy to hear great new songs to add to a playlist of the songs I like in a specific year. It's also due to my desire to find new dances to learn accompanying the songs but my point is that if a person does get in the habit of seeking new songs, especially with the platforms that help with discovery then it's the person choosing not to find new music in situations where they aren't. This is fine and good. I go back all the time to my comfort music too. I think I'm also more interested in change in general too.

The Baba O'Riley erasure in this post is deafening.

Really cool article. I’m wondering what made a single like Two Princes so popular to put in movies and shows in the 90s or maybe I’m just misremembering

In recent years I feel like the Pixies "Where is My Mind" has been featured as heavily as any other song. Fight Club was the first, afaik, but recent appearances include The Leftovers and Mr. Robot. I think I happened to watch those shows around the same time, and it seemed like this song was EVERYWHERE, and it hasn't gone away: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-94Snw-H4o

Love this analysis! I quizzed my wife on the top 3 and she got At Last fairly quickly but struggled with the otheother 2. Would this data include appearances in reality shows such as American Idol or The Voice?

Nice one. I consistently find music through soundtracks. One of nicest features of streaming platforms like Apple is when they have a button to add a song from show/movie to my music library without having to pause, etc

As someone who has attended way too many kids films it feels likes every single one of them has ice ice baby and final countdown in them. Any data on kid movie songs?

Fascinating read! I think this is why Baby Driver works so well.
