Interesting! I would love to see a semantic analysis of movie reviews based on the gender of the director, to try to answer some of the questions piqued by your afterthought. DO women put unique perspectives into their films? I'd love to know what the data says. :)

I do think the original Point Break has subtle tones about masculinity unlikely to have been captued by most male directors. At the same itme lets not lose sight of the fact that Bigelow is one hell of a good action director. Any man with her resume ( Near Dark, Strange Days, Zero Dark Thirty ) would be way more praised and in demand. Even when she doesn't completely nail it (Blue Steel, K19: The Widowmaker) she does so with style. Her movies are far better than most of the men who keep getting another shot after making a boring action movies.
